Shooting Technique

In this section I have a lot of pictures that will hopefully explain the mechanics of shooting. I start with position and then continue with sight alignment and breathing.

The length of the rifle stock can be determined by placing the butt of your rifle in the crook of your arm with the barrel pointing straight up. The trigger should be between the tip and first joint in your finger. The above picture does an okay job of showing how to determine this length.

A few basics of prone position. This picture does not show but looking from above this shoulder are level. This can be adjusted with the position of the hand stop. The arm with the cuff and sling should have an angle of 90-100 degrees, this can be adjusted with the length of sling.

In standing position, feet should be shoulder width apart and straight, no bend. Hip can be slightly cocked out depending on personal body structure. Notice how person in red has hip out more while person in yellow is more straight. The forward elbow should have good contact with the hip bone and the wrist should be kept straight. On the trigger arm the elbow should be kept sticking out ward at about 90 degrees not down against your side. Remember to be relaxed, you are creating a stable platform for the rifle to rest on, you are not holing the rifle.

Here is what a proper sight picture looks like. Notice how everything is aligned perfectly equal. When looking through the sight you want to put the focus of your eye on the white ring around the target.

After correct position the first thing to focus on is breathing. You want to breath the same way every time you shoot and between every shot. If you take one, two, or three breathes between each shot is up to you, but you want to do it the same each time as well as you want to stop exhaling with the same amount of air left in your lungs each time. Notice the graph above, breath in, breath out, breath in, breath half way out, cut you breath, take the shot.

This graph goes along with the previous one. This is what you will see through your sight as you breath. As you breath in your sight will drop below the target and as you breath out the sight will move up onto the target. IMPORTANT NOTE: this is a natural movement and should not be forced, as you breath this will naturally happen.

After breathing and sight alignment becomes automated and in shooting in general the most important part of shooting is trigger squeeze. The trigger squeeze itself can be the difference between a hit and a miss. The graph shows how the pressure of a proper trigger squeeze should look with time on the X-axis and pressure on the Y-axis. The purple is proper for prone, pink for standing, and orange is WRONG. Notice the first 90% is taken up initially and quickly then the last 10% slowly and controlled. When the shot brakes no one should be able to see your finger move. This graph does not show follow through which is equally important. Follow through happens after the shot. For 1 second after the shot there should be no movement in the body, no breathing, not finger movement, no blinking, no toe twitching, no nothing, perfectly still.

This graph shows different times of different phases of shooting and can give perspective on how a person can become a quicker shooting. Work on this should only happen after all of the above precision aspects have been mastered.

Lastly this picture shows how the entire shooting process is like a wheel and how every aspect happens between each shot that is taken.

All of the concepts talked about here are the basics of shooting but if you can master them you well be starting on the right foot and have a good base to build from.
